Simsisms of April

If you read MM last year, you know that we absolutely love Ners broadcaster Dave Sims. He’s got one of the best spirits in the game, has an extensive knowledge of baseball history, and is a pretty good broadcaster to boot. But there’s one thing in particular we love about Dave…let’s just say he has a “tendency for the obscure.” At least a few times a game, Mr. Sims makes an off-the-cuff comment that’s just a little bit strange. We call them “Simsisms,” a tongue-twisting word that attempts to label the brain-twisting phrases that at times emerge from Dave’s mouth, and at the end of each month, we break down the best 5 that we heard. We can’t catch them all, but the ones we do catch are normally pretty darn good. And even though Dave was on the DL for the majority of April, we still caught 5 Simsisms to kick off your 2018 collection:

“When you write your book, you should put a

chapter in there about tells.”

This one came as Mike Blowers was describing how pitchers can occasionally tip their pitches. What struck me as funny about it is the thought of Dave revering Blow for being a master of tells – along with the thought of Mike Blowers writing a book.

“Johnny Cueto on the ropes, let’s see if they can knock him THROUGH the ropes!”

Classic Dave here, trying to come up with some sort of pun to accompany his narration of the game. I’d like to think he finished this by turning to Blowers with a “get it?!” look on his face – and then Blowers responding with a monotone “shut up.”

“And then Fernando…wait no, it’s Felix Hernandez. I was thinking of the shimmy-shake. Who will out shimmy-shake the other?”

This bumbling bit of broadcasting came as ol’ Dave was looking at the upcoming pitching matchups, in which Felix Hernandez was set to face-off against Erik Skoglund. Nobody on the screen was named Fernando. And I have no idea what the shimmy-shake is.

“Thank you, Mr. Roker!”

Were it not for the incredible image he posted of himself wearing a Ben Gamel cap (below), this would easily be #1. As the team was wrapping up their series in San Francisco, Dave and Blowers were talking about their next stop, Minnesota, and how it was going to be so damn cold there. ROOT then flashed the upcoming forecast on the screen, and Dave said this. It was then that it hit me…Dave Sims is Al Roker as a sports broadcaster.
